A closer look: The new Tecnosicurezza Swingbolt lock

The risk of a closed but not locked safe door is reduced by the Tecnosicurezza new Swingbolt/Rotobolt lock:

Thanks to a 2-step blocking mechanism!

Most commonly used high-security electronic locks on safes are swingbolts. For many good reasons. Designed with few parts, minimalized dimensions and automatic closing, the swing bolt lock provides a secure, reliable and economic solution.

The new Swingbolt/Rotobolt lock by Tecnosicurezza.

Swingbolt: Function

Swingbolt locks block on one side against the direction of movement of the bolt work. If a valid code has been entered, the lock electronic removes the blocking for 3 seconds and the boltwork can be moved into open position by pushing the bolt inside the lock case. When moving the boltwork into locked position the swingbolt automatically secures.

… new times

For years, this lock was used with unchanged mechanics. However, by the use of audits and remote monitoring, the use of a sensor for the bolt position resulted in a problem: The sensor on a swingbolt lock can only be accurately set to the open status. Closing results in tolerances as to exactly when the sensor triggers.

… new challenges

This tolerance could be used by clever safe users to manipulate the audit in the a way that the locking of the door was already indicated even though the safe was not yet locked. The safe handle could still be turned back because the lock has not yet finally blocked. As a result, the safe opens the next time it is opened without a code entry.

Such a process was, of course, viewable in the audit. You could see that no code entry was made by a safe user during the opening process.

A difference of 10 degrees is visible.

… new solutions

Tecnosicurezza has eliminated the described possibility of manipulation in the development of the new Swingbolt lock:

The new Tecnosicurezza Swingbolt/Rotobolt lock features a 2-step blocking mechanism.

  • In the fhe first step the lock blocks much earlier than before: even before the sensor indicates closure.
  • In the second step the lock blocks completely.

Compared to other locks, the position/rotation of the safe handle indicates when it can no longer be turned back: the difference to other locks is about 10 degrees (see illustration). The risk of a closed but not locked safe door is eliminated and the audit is completely reliable.
